Two Rockford, Illinois artists have joined artistic forces to create this thrilling exhibit of oil and watercolor paintings on both canvas and silk.
An exploration of color, value, and form with representational subject matter is evident in the paintings of Jean Apgar. She uses the juxtaposition of positive and negative shapes along with color and value contrasts to form a composition based loosely on the tenets developed by early Baroque painters in Holland, known as Dutch Little Masters.
Though animals, particularly wild animals, are her favorite subject matter, this exhibit also includes her paintings of 1900's farm buildings.
The oil paintings by Peg Sowle reveal her quest to find and portray the individuality and soul of each of her subjects. It is her remarkable ability to recognize the essence of her subject matter that creates the difference between a picture and a portrait.
Using oil on canvas, she carefully layers and blends, seeking with paint the point at which the picture becomes that portrait and the unique soul of each subject reveals itself.
